Since you are self-employed, please be aware that if you have access to your spouse’s group insurance plan, you are required by law to enrol in it. That plan will at least cover health care.
If you do not access to another plan, the Chambers Group Insurance Plan may be a good choice for you. The plan includes:
-
Life insurance
-
Accidental death and dismemberment insurance
-
Two of the following: short-term disability insurance, long-term disability insurance, medical care, dental care and critical illness coverage
However, under the Québec government’s Act respecting prescription drug insurance, selfemployed workers cannot obtain prescription drug coverage through a group insurance plan. The Act requires that prescription drug coverage be provided b the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ). The health care portion of the plan can provide everything else (e.g. ambulance services, hospitalization, chiropractor services, psychologist services, travel insurance, lab tests), but not prescription drugs. These remain the responsibility of the RAMQ, for which you must pay the annual premium of $636 when you file your income tax return in addition to the cost of the plan you have selected.
If you wish to purchase an individual disability insurance policy instead, to protect your income in the event that you have to stop working, we can put you in touch with a broker to discuss this option.
