The Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal is proud to present
Downtown work organization: Approaches and incentives to optimize work organization for business productivity
, a study carried out as part of the “I love working downtown” initiative with the support of the Ministère de l'Économie, de l'Innovation et de l'Énergie.
Despite a marked improvement in the rate at which workers are returning to the downtown core, the optimal balance in terms of work reorganization has not yet been reached, and the vitality of downtown Montréal is still feeling the effects of this loss of traffic.
Indeed, this sector, which is vital to the province's economy, faces major challenges that can be observed in most major cities in Canada and the U.S.: there's a pronounced labour shortage, commuting times between home and work are exacerbated by traffic congestion, and the housing model means that most workers have a space at home suitable for telecommuting.
In this study, the Chamber documents the perceptions and intentions of companies and workers with regard to the organization of work, identifies the category of workers most reluctant to come work in the office, and sets out concrete and effective measures to be put in place to demonstrate the added value of the office. These measures include:
-
Offering flexible working hours
-
Subsidizing public transit fares
-
Organizing professional activities to develop workers' skills
-
Organizing informal social activities
-
Emphasizing downtown Montréal's commercial, cultural and epicurean offerings.
This study is based on a survey of 1,090 workers, qualitative interviews with 18 downtown employers and the expertise of a strategic committee of the Chamber, which is working to revitalize the downtown area.
