Press release
Sylvain Vincent named Chairman of the board of directors
of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal for 2010-2011
Montréal, November 3, 2010 – The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal held its annual meeting yesterday, during which members elected their board of directors for 2010-2011. Mr. Sylvain Vincent, Managing Partner of Ernst & Young for Eastern Canada, has been named Chairman of the board for a one-year term. He succeeds Mr. Erik Ryan, Senior Vice-President, Communications and External Relations of Rio Tinto Alcan.
Born in Montréal, where he has spent all of his life, Mr. Vincent has particular affection for his city. “My bike rides through the neighbourhoods of Montréal have made me realize how vibrant, inclusive and captivating our city is,” he said. “To preserve this collective wealth and give us the means to reinvest, it is important to promote and encourage front-line economic activity.”
Since the Board of Trade was founded, it has worked to make Montréal an incubator of business opportunities. Given the still fragile economy, this role takes on more meaning and importance than ever. “I am committed to never losing sight of the goal of prosperity for our businesses,” Mr. Vincent said. “I am confident I’ll be able to draw on the passion that fuels our members, the talent of the Board of Trade’s team of experts and the support of a dedicated board of directors in working toward this goal.”
Mr. Vincent joined Ernst & Young in 1979 and was named partner in 1990. In 1999, he received the honorary title of Fellow of the Ordre des comptables agréés du Québec. From 1995 to 2007, he managed the Transaction Advisory Services Group for Quebec, which saw exceptional growth under his watch. He has also performed mandates in financial reorganization and mergers and acquisitions for the company’s clients. He sat on the company’s management committee for Quebec for eight years, before being named managing partner.
Mr. Vincent is very active in the business community and has been president or treasurer of a number of its professional associations. As a graduate of HEC Montréal, he has acted as president of his alumni association, the Réseau HEC.
Mr. Vincent is convinced that post-secondary studies are the key to the future of young people and the answer to our economic needs, so he actively supports the Quebec Pathways to Education Program to reduce the dropout rate among high school students. And to encourage the next generation and promote education, Mr. Vincent has successfully headed up a number of annual fundraising campaigns in his workplace for universities in Quebec and their students.
Mr. Vincent was also treasurer of Special Olympics Québec and president or patron of honour for fundraising campaigns for the On the Tip of the Toes Foundation and the Pacific Path Institute. All three organizations are dedicated to the service of young people.
As Chairman of the board of directors of the Board of Trade, Sylvain Vincent will be involved in the Board of Trade’s activities during the year and then as Retiring Chair of the board the following year. Throughout this period, Mr. Vincent will sit on the Board of Trade’s executive committee.
