The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal applauds the
confirmation of Montreal as host of the 2005
FINA Aquatic World Championships
Montreal , February 10, 2005 On behalf of its some 7,000 members, the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal welcomes this morning's confirmation of Montreal as host of the 11th Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA) 2005 World Aquatic Championships.
Confirmation that the 2005 FINA World Aquatic Championships will be held in Montreal is excellent news for our city, and we applaud the leadership and determination of Mayor Gérald Tremblay, stated Isabelle Hudon, interim President and CEO of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal. Without the energy and tireless efforts of Mayor Tremblay, Montreal would no doubt have lost this important event, which is being held for the first time in North America.
This major international sports competition will see Montreal welcome thousands of athletes, journalists and visitors from around the world and will bring some $60 million dollars to our region's tourist industry and economy, continued Hudon. The Championships will also contribute to Montreal's profile and our image on the world stage as a dynamic and vibrant city. Most particularly, the event will allow our athletes to compete before their own fans and in doing so inspire local youngsters to strive for excellence.
There are still major challenges ahead, and it is essential that all stakeholders, both private and public, support Mayor Tremblay in making this event a resounding success. Let's ensure that the 11th World Aquatic Championships fully reflect Montreal 's world-class stature and reputation for great hospitality, concluded Hudon.
The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal has some 7,000 members. Its primary mission is to represent the interests of the business community of Greater Montreal and to provide individuals, merchants and businesses of all sizes with a variety of specialized services to help them achieve their full potential in terms of innovation, productivity and competitiveness. The Board of Trade is Quebec 's leading private economic development organization.
