Montreal The secret to Quebec's success
Montreal, March 17, 2006 On the occasion of the luncheon attended by Quebec Premier Jean Charest, the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal reiterated the key role the City plays in Quebec's success and commended Mr. Charest's initiatives in this regard.
Premier Charest's statements about the importance of Greater Montreal were particularly relevant. The truth is, Quebec has only one metropolis. And so when the government invests in its success, it means that all Quebecers, not just Montrealers, benefit, stated the president and chief executive of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal, Isabelle Hudon.
The two superhospital projects, confirmed by the Premier, are a glowing example of just how much Montreal's development impacts on the rest of the province. These two projects will allow Quebec to consolidate its position as a global leader in the field of life sciences. And in this regard, it's safe to say that Montreal's unique critical mass, due in large part to its two medical faculties, will be developed to the benefit of everyone in Quebec: patients across the province will receive specialized care, and physicians who will have been trained there will take their expertise well beyond Montreal's borders, continued Isabelle Hudon.
The importance Premier Charest places on sustainable development is yet another element that could contribute to Montreal's success. To attract talent and to be competitive on the world stage, Montreal must rely on the characteristics that make it exceptional. As such, initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of the urban environment are particularly promising. A highly structuring project in this regard is the new Montreal/Mascouche-Repentigny commuter train link announced by Transport Minister Michel Deprés and the Minister responsible for the Montreal region, Line Beauchamp. Also, it was very reassuring to hear the Premier acknowledge that public transit is essential for a modern urban centre and that other initiatives such as metro car upgrading, which will up shore the city's growth, added Isabelle Hudon.
The Board of Trade is driven by the firm belief that the City has the creativity, talent and ideas to realize Quebec's loftiest ambitions. The challenge is to do what it takes for Montreal and the entire province to achieve greatness, concluded Isabelle Hudon.
The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal has some 7,000 members. Its mission is to represent the interests of the business community of Greater Montreal and to provide individuals, merchants and businesses of all sizes with a variety of specialized services to help them achieve their full potential in terms of innovation, productivity and competitiveness. The Board of Trade is the largest private organization in Quebec dedicated to economic development.
