Press release
Elliot Lifson appointed chairman of
the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal
Montreal, October 12, 2006 The members of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal gathered today at the organization's Annual Meeting, where they appointed Elliot Lifson as chairman for a one-year term and elected the board's members for 2006-2007. Mr. Lifson, vice-chairman at Vêtements Peerless Clothing inc., succeeds outgoing chair Marie-Claude Lalande, assistant vice-president and senior counsel at Sun Life Financial.
For the past 30 years, Elliot Lifson has been working in the Canadian apparel industry. He is president of the Canadian Apparel Federation; member of the Federal Government Sectoral Advisory Group on International Trade; member of the Advisory Council to the Retail Council of Canada for the Advancement of Responsible Trade; advisor to the Government of Quebec and the City of Montreal for the Apparel industry; director of the Montreal Fashion Foundation; director of the Montreal Fashion Week. He also sits on the board of directors of the Apparel Manufacturers Institute of Quebec, the Apparel Human Resource Council of Canada, and is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Management at McGill University. He is also active in many community activities, including the board of directors of Maimonides Hospital, PROMIS (Promotion, Intégration, Société nouvelle), Women's Y campaign, the Fondation de la tolérance; as well as a member of the Barreau du Québec and the Lord Reading Law Society. He is a graduate in law from the University of Montreal, and a graduate from the University of Western Ontario with an MBA.
I'm extremely honoured to accept the position of chairman of the Board of Trade and to contribute directly to such important causes as the success of Montreal and the Board of Trade's members. I'm especially pleased to be a part of this organization and its efforts to promote such major local projects as the superhospitals and the development of the Montreal port. I'm also planning to devote time during this mandate to some of my own pet projects in which the Board of Trade has a central role to play, for example, attracting and integrating immigrants, building greater synergy between the management schools that are educating tomorrow's leaders and the business community, and boosting entrepreneurship in Montreal, stated the Board of Trade's new chairman, Elliot Lifson.
Mr. Lifson will be actively involved in the Board of Trade's activities during his one-year term as chairman and then as outgoing chairman the following year. During this two-year period, he will also serve on the Executive and Human Resources committees. It bears mentioning that since February 2005 Isabelle Hudon has been the Board of Trade's permanent president and as such is its chief executive and official spokesperson.
