Enbridge Line 9B: the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal applauds the National Energy Board decision and reiterates the importance of ensuring the project’s social acceptance

Montréal, March 7, 2014 The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal reiterates its support for Enbridge’s Line 9B reversal project and is delighted that the National Energy Board has given its authorization. For the Board of Trade, Enbridge’s reversal project will boost the economic development of Quebec and Montréal. However, it is important that the company put in place strict measures to reassure the public and ensure the project’s social acceptance.

“This is great news for the city,” said Michel Leblanc, President and CEO of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal. “Reversing the flow in Enbridge’s Line 9B will create a stable supply and promote the competitiveness of our petrochemical industry. Yesterday’s decision by the National Energy Board will connect us to the primary North American supply networks. The refining industry in the eastern part of the country is currently captive to overseas oil, which is more expensive than Canadian oil.”

“As we noted during public hearings with the National Energy Board and Quebec’s National Assembly, the project’s deployment must be accompanied by flawless and transparent measures with respect to safety, both for the public and the environment,” Michel Leblanc said. “Further to statements by the Mayor of Montréal and President of the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal, Denis Coderre, Enbridge should take into account the recommendations of the National Assembly of Quebec. We believe that the recommendation that the company participate in developing the clean tech industry in the petrochemical sector is particularly important for the city.”
