The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal seeks mayor for Montréal

Montréal, May 1, 2013 –  The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal is excited to launch its A New Mayor for Montréal initiative today, meant to fuel debate to help Montréal find a leader who can restore its standing among the world’s great cities.

“On the eve of its 375th anniversary, Montréal is facing a serious crisis of governance and trust, mediocre economic performance, major development projects that are late getting off the ground and a tarnished image both at home and abroad,” says Michel Leblanc, President and CEO of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal. “The next election is no ordinary one; it is crucial for the city’s future and that of its residents and business community.”

“Between now and the November 3 election, the Board of Trade would like to stimulate discussion about the particular challenges facing our city and priorities for the business community,” Michel Leblanc says. “A New Mayor for Montréal establishes the qualities the next mayor must have to tackle three major challenges: rebuilding trust between citizens and city hall, establishing strong leadership, which will put the mayor on firm footing with other levels of government, and rebuilding the city’s image.”

Our initiative begins with the publication of a job posting that describes the qualities of an aspiring mayor and the central issues that he or she will have to tackle if elected. “In any recruitment process, candidates must demonstrate to the employer why they should be chosen over someone else and what difference they can make to the company,” Mr. Leblanc says. “Well, that’s what Montréal businesses want to hear from the next mayor. I encourage the business community and the public to mobilize to choose a mayor who lives up to their expectations.”
