Industrial design as a tool for sustainable urban development
Montréal, January 16, 2008 The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal congratulates Claude Mauffette Design Industriel, winner of the industrial design competition held by the City of Montréal to design a new tool for collecting recyclable materials.
This competition enabled us to call upon the creativity and know-how of Montréal design firms. This tool, developed to facilitate the collection of recyclable materials, is yet another demonstration of Montréal's vitality as a city of design, a title granted it by UNESCO in 2006, declared Isabelle Hudon, president and CEO of the Board of Trade.
In organizing this competition, the City not only highlighted the talent of a local designer and chose a design for an object of public utility, but also fulfilled one of the commitments spelled out in the action plan drawn up for the metropolis during the Rendez-vous November 2007 Montréal, cultural metropolis. I am one of those people who believe in our talents and see in creative endeavours such as this competition an approach stimulating innovative and avant-garde ideas. This type of initiative is in line with an approach promoting urban development that is both sustainable and creative and that, above all, deserves to be repeated, concluded Hudon.
The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal has some 7,000 members. Its primary mission is to represent the interests of the business community of Greater Montreal and to provide individuals, merchants, and local businesses of all sizes with a variety of specialized services to help them achieve their full potential in terms of innovation, productivity and competitiveness. The Board of Trade is Quebec's leading private economic development organization.
