Montréal, March 8, 2018 ‒ The Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal is delighted with the signature of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), which occurred today in Santiago, Chile, in the presence of the ministers of trade of the 11 CPTPP member countries.
“The signature of this agreement is excellent news for our business community,” said Michel Leblanc, President and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal. “Montréal is the Canadian city of free trade, and our leaders have made a major contribution to historic agreements, such as the NAFTA and the CETA. This new agreement provides an additional driver of growth for local exporters. It gives them access to an expanding zone, with close to 500 million consumers.”
“The Chamber applauds the leadership of the Government of Canada, particularly that of Minister François-Philippe Champagne, which led to the signature of this key agreement,” Mr. Leblanc said. “And thanks to the determination of the government and Minister Mélanie Joly, products from our cultural industries will be protected under this partnership, which safeguards the fundamental character of culture to our identity.”
“Diversifying access to foreign markets for local companies is always good news,” Mr. Leblanc said. “Against the backdrop of the renegotiation of the NAFTA and uncertainty in the American market, this agreement comes at the right time. The CPTPP offers new prospects for agri-food processors in strategic markets such as Japan, which is the third largest export market for Canadian agricultural and agri-food products. It also promotes the development of other sectors of the city’s economy, such as information and communications technology, financial services and clean tech.”
“Innovative local businesses are well positioned to benefit from this agreement and increase their integration to global value chains,” Michel Leblanc said. “That’s something we can be pleased about.”
