The Chamber throws its support behind the new Quebec Export Strategy

Montréal, October 24, 2016 ‒ The Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montréal (CCMM) welcomes the release of the 2016-2020 Quebec Export Strategy by the Minister of Economy, Science and Innovation and Minister responsible for the Digital Strategy, Dominique Anglade. The addition of $125 million over the next four years to help local businesses export comes at a critical moment in the economic cycle.

“Exports have long been one of the province’s economic pillars,” said Michel Leblanc, President and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal. “Close to half of our GDP depends on local business performance on export markets. This explains the tireless support of the city’s businesses for free trade agreements with our main trading partners. But we need to realize that we can have an even stronger presence on foreign markets. Many SMEs are still reluctant to invest the time and resources to develop new markets. The Chamber congratulates the Government of Quebec for adopting an ambitious strategy for local business.”

“The American economy continues to drive global growth,” Michel Leblanc said. “Europe, with which we still hope to sign a free trade agreement, is an enormous market. A number of other markets are growing quickly, particularly India. Given the circumstances, the Strategy’s proposed sector-based rather than geographical support shows promise, because it would more readily support businesses on international markets that are in line with their activities.”

“The internationalization of local businesses has been a priority for the CCMM for a number of years,” Mr. Leblanc said. “Our Acclr international trade experts offer specially designed services to increase the competitiveness of businesses and launch them in export markets. The Chamber will continue in its efforts to guide local SMEs on export markets and offers its full cooperation to the Government of Quebec to meet the targets in its Export Strategy.”

The CCMM is pleased to be hosting Minister Anglade on Monday, October 24, when she will have a chance to offer more detailed explanations about the Export Strategy.
