The Board of Trade applauds commitments from the three levels of government and encourages the private sector to be part of the success of the celebrations
Montréal, October 27, 2014 – The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal is delighted to announce the kick-off of the organization of festivities for the 375th anniversary of Montréal announced today by the Society for the Celebration of Montréal’s 375th Anniversary, with the Ville de Montréal, the Government of Québec and the Government of Canada. It applauds the commitment of the Mayor and President of the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal, Denis Coderre, to create a legacy that will contribute to the city’s economic growth and influence. But it urges the Government of Canada to disclose the budget it intends to invest in this landmark anniversary.
“The 375th anniversary of Montréal, which coincides with the 150th anniversary of Confederation and the 50th anniversary of Expo 67, calls for the three levels of government to invest in activities that strengthen the city’s positioning,” said President and CEO of the Board of Trade, Michel Leblanc. “Today’s announcement is vital and is indeed excellent news. But the Government of Canada still hasn’t disclosed how much it will invest in these celebrations, and it must do so as soon as possible.”
“The legacy projects announced today will go a long way to the city’s economic revitalization,” Mr. Leblanc said. “By prioritizing structuring projects, such as redoing Sainte-Catherine St. West, covering the Ville-Marie Expressway and the Bonaventure project, Montréal’s 375th anniversary will also help boost Montrealers’ and Quebecers’ pride in the city.”
“Building a city is a collective effort,” Michel Leblanc said. “The success of Montréal’s 375th anniversary celebrations and the lasting nature of their legacy are a responsibility shared by the public sector, the private sector and citizens. This is why we are calling on the business community to fulfill its role and pitch in for the city’s benefit.”
