The Chamber announces $2.4 million in funding to support 6 new creative projects for downtown workers

Montréal, August 8, 2022 ‒ The Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal is thrilled to announce the winners of its call for creative projects as part of phase 2 of the “I love working downtown” initiative. This call for projects by invitation allowed local creators, originators and designers who stood out during the selection process for phase 1 to propose original projects to enhance spaces frequented by workers, in collaboration with downtown property owners. After a rigorous evaluation process, the Chamber selected 6 projects for their exceptional quality and ability to increase traffic in the downtown core.

With $2.4 million in funding and the support of the Ministère de l’Économie et de l’Innovation (MEI), the Chamber will help bring these projects to life. The projects will be carried out over the next few months in several private and semi-private spaces in the downtown area. They are part of the second phase of a successful initiative that has given rise to new iconic symbols for Montréal, including two permanent installations: The Ring by Ivanhoé Cambridge, and Generations of Greatness by the Montréal Canadiens, LNDMRK and Lumenpulse.

“We are pleased to be able to generate more creative projects for the downtown core. The excitement surrounding the first phase of our ré·CRÉATIONMTL program has proven that signature creative projects help make downtown more appealing. The Chamber’s involvement, with the support of the MEI, also fosters closer collaboration between cultural and creative industry leaders and downtown property owners. These 6 new art installations will make downtown that much more vibrant and offer workers a nicer downtown experience,” said Michel Leblanc.

“By supporting these projects, we are making a tangible contribution to giving workers the urge to come back to downtown Montréal more often, with new inspiring and entertaining spaces. It is also an opportunity for local artists to revive the energy of this central location while expressing their originality and talent. This initiative will undoubtedly have a significant impact on economic activity in the heart of the city,” said Chantal Rouleau, Minister for Transport and Minister Responsible for the Metropolis and the Montréal Region.

In March 2021, the MEI gave the Chamber a mandate to support downtown Montréal’s economic recovery, thanks to an $8.5 million contribution. A year later, the Chamber obtained an additional $6 million in funding to enhance and extend its most promising efforts for relaunching downtown Montréal.

In this second phase, the Chamber will enhance its ré·CRÉATIONMTL program with the installation of additional creative projects in private and semi-private spaces. The Chamber and the Quebec government wish to amplify the effect of these projects with a greater volume of creative interventions and an abundance of original offerings that will make the downtown core hum with activity for an extended period. To this end, the Chamber conducted a call for projects by invitation for the applicants who had stood out during the first call for projects, in order to recognize the work of those whose projects were particularly outstanding.
