The CCMM and more than 20 partners launch Relançons MTL, an economic movement to stimulate the recovery of Greater Montréal

Montréal, Tuesday, September 8, 2020 ‒ The Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal and some 20 partners are proud to launch the movement Relaunch MTL, powered by the Government of Canada, the Government of Québec, the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal, and the Ville de Montréal, in association with Investissement Québec and in cooperation with the Palais des congrès de Montréal.

Relaunch MTL will mobilize actors in the Greater Montréal economic ecosystem with the goal of accelerating the relaunch of the economy. It will be a chance to create sites of discussion, encourage the sharing of best practices and know-how and come up with concrete actions to help decision makers deploy an approach that is in line with the needs of different sectors. Relaunch MTL will target 14 key sectors of the economy:

The city’s clusters and associations that represent these driving sectors for the city are strategic partners in the movement. Their involvement will make it possible to identify issues and challenges sectors face, and to identify opportunities we need to seize and priority efforts for a successful relaunch. Every sector will be the subject of a situational analysis and a specific action plan to support its relaunch.

“We are very proud today to launch Relaunch MTL, an important economic movement that will look at fourteen sectors of activity that are pillars of the Greater Montréal economy. While the COVID-19 crisis was initially a health crisis, it has quickly become an economic crisis of unprecedented scale. While the rebound has already begun, we have to look further into the future and make the right decisions. We are working together to identify opportunities to seize, to review our ways of doing things, and to determine how our industries can become even more innovative and resilient. This is the ambition of Relaunch MTL,” said Michel Leblanc, President and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal.

COVID-19 has had a serious impact on our region, and our government is here to support Greater Montreal’s workers and businesses as we face this crisis together. As our economy recovers, we are proud to kick off the MTL Relaunch initiative, which will help stimulate the local economy, support good jobs and prepare us for success in the months ahead. Supported by all three levels of government and the business community, this will help our economy become even more resilient and innovative, create local jobs and help Montreal come back strong,” said the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages.

“The impact of the pandemic on the job market requires that all economic players mobilize. We are pleased to be able to contribute $425,000 to Relaunch MTL and to the efforts spearheaded by the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal, its partners, and the sectoral clusters and associations. Workers in all sectors have been affected by the crisis to varying degrees. A return to the job market and restoring jobs are a government priority. Thanks to the cooperation of the business community and pooling expertise and know-how, we can tackle the challenges that lie ahead and facilitate a strong and lasting economic recovery,” said Jean Boulet, Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Solidarity for Québec.

“The city and the Montréal area have important sectors of activity for the Québec economy, such as aerospace and life sciences. This is in addition to the impressive concentration of researchers in artificial intelligence in the city. I am delighted to see that different levels of government and the industrial clusters have decided to join forces to relaunch the metropolitan economy, which is needed to restore our pre-pandemic prosperity. I applaud the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal for this initiative and for its leadership. It has once again shown its ability to mobilize the Montréal business community,” said Chantal Rouleau, Minister of Transport for Québec and Minister Responsible for the Metropolis and the Montréal Region.

“The series of forums announced today by the Chamber of Commerce and the industrial clusters are completely in line with the Ville de Montréal’s relaunch game plan. This coalition of partners and actors will mobilize us toward concrete, necessary relaunch objectives to help the metropolitan economy get back on its feet,” said Valérie Plante, Mayor of Montréal and President of the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal.  

“I am extremely proud of the community’s commitment to this incredible mobilization. I would like to thank Mélanie Joly, Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages for Canada. She has been listening and supported the creation of this unifying movement since day one. I would also like to thank the Minister of Economy and Innovation for Québec, Pierre Fitzgibbon, the Minister of Labour, Jean Boulet and the Minister Responsible for the Metropolis, Chantal Rouleau, who are fully committed to the relaunch of Québec’s economic driver. I would also like to acknowledge the support of the Mayor of Montréal and President of the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal, Valérie Plante, for this initiative, which the entire metropolitan area will benefit from. The participation of the three levels of government in Relaunch MTL is a powerful symbol of the importance of this mobilization, which, we are convinced, will fuel the optimism that is taking hold again in the business community and which will help lay the foundation for the successful relaunch of our economy,” Michel Leblanc said.

Relaunch MTL has received funding of $750,000 from the Government of Canada, $425,000 from the Government of Québec, $200,000 of it from the ministère du Travail, de l’Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale of Québec, 100 000 $ from the ministère de l’Économie et de l’Innovation and $125,000 from Investissement Québec, and a contribution from the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal and the Ville de Montréal.

The movementwill include nine action plans, nine sectoral forums, five talks, and a closing event in November. It is produced in partnership with Aéro Montréal, AluQuébec, the Association de la construction du Québec, the Quebec Film and Television Council, CargoM – Logistics and Transportation Metropolitan Cluster of Montréal, Ecotech Québec, Finance Montréal, La Guilde du jeu vidéo du Québec, mmode – the Metropolitan Fashion Cluster, Montréal International, Montréal InVivo, Propulsion Québec, TechnoMontréal and Tourisme Montréal.
