Montréal, March 17, 2020 ‒ The Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal has confirmed with its executive committee that all of its permanent employees will continue to work over the next few weeks. It encourages businesses in Quebec and Montréal to do everything within their power to protect as many jobs as possible.
“The measures, restrictions and closings imposed by the Government of Quebec for essential health reasons is putting enormous pressure on the cash flow of businesses,” said Michel Leblanc, president and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal. “We are all aware that the situation will have a major impact on our results this year. Corporate leadership must make extremely difficult decisions for the survival of their companies and the well-being of their employees. To the extent possible, we need to keep as many people as we can working as we get through this crisis.”
“We have made the decision at the Chamber to keep our permanent employees working over the next few weeks, despite the suspension of all of our public activities and services that require in-person meetings,” Mr. Leblanc said. “Our employees have been busy since Thursday informing our members and clients of the implications of this exceptional situation, collecting information that can help decision making during the crisis and rapidly developing new services that will be helpful to businesses in the coming weeks.”
“Over the past few days, we have all started to rapidly rethink how we work,” Michel Leblanc said. “It is our collective responsibility to direct our efforts to reducing the spread of COVID-19 within the community. We are issuing an appeal to all companies to get as many employees as possible involved in efforts to protect their health, despite the enormous financial pressure they are under. Employees are the most valuable part of any business. We will need them to organize the recovery when the time comes.”
