Montréal, April 17, 2020 ‒ The Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal welcomes this morning’s announcement by the federal government that it will allocate substantial funding to support small businesses across regions, industrial research and the cultural sector.
“The Government of Canada’s announcements this morning represent significant additions to an already robust aid apparatus,” said Michel Leblanc, president and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal. “The amount paid to regional development agencies and community development networks expands the assistance available to small businesses that do not qualify for the wage subsidy or the emergency business account. We again recognize the government’s attentiveness and responsiveness, as it continues to adjust the aid available to reach as many businesses as possible.”
“The addition of $270 million in funding for industrial research will make it possible to support innovative businesses and start-ups that are currently operating in a context of precariousness,” Mr. Leblanc said. “This is highly strategic aid for the Canadian economy as a whole, but particularly for the city. The survival of these innovative businesses will assure the future in many sectors.”
“With bans on gatherings and health restrictions in effect, the arts, cultural and sports sectors have been hit hard by the crisis,” Michel Leblanc said. “These sectors will undoubtedly be among the last to have some semblance of normalcy restored. These are key sectors for Montréal, which is known for the vitality of its cultural events and the strength of its creative spirit, both at home and internationally. The $500 million budget can provide direct aid to individuals and cash to organizations in the sector to make up in part for the financial losses caused by an almost complete shutdown of their activities. We need to continue to support and encourage these sectors in the coming months.”
