Context
Combining the arts, culture and technology, the cultural and creative industries have been helping to make Montréal a city that continues to set itself apart on the international stage for many years now. Our creativity is become increasingly recognized, and the benefits it creates in terms of employment and wealth contribute to a vibrant economy. The crisis has had a significant impact on the many facets of these industries, be it the production and distribution of films, animation, special effects, video games, interactive installations, the living arts, the visual arts or music. While some have experienced a downturn because of production chain disruptions or a decreased ability to reach their audiences, others are still thriving and are having to contend with growth issues. But for all of them, a number of key issues remain. While we need to preserve a strong and resilient creative heart, we must also ensure the availability of a properly trained workforce and targeted funding with a tax structure suited to the specific characteristics of the different sub-sectors. A lot goes into making sure that our cultural and creative industries are able to successfully market themselves here and in other countries.
