The attachment of downtown Montréal workers to Chinatown is undeniable. Its paifangs, traditional arches that stand at four key intersections, are emblematic of the downtown landscape. The pandemic has had a disproportionate impact on Chinatown merchants. The abandonment of businesses at the start of the pandemic has weakened the area, which is also affected by the increase in hate and racist incidents.
Today, the actors at the heart of Chinatown's economic activity are uniting for the inclusive revitalization of the sector. To ensure its success, the voice of the merchants, residents, community and all stakeholders involved in this revitalization must be heard.
It is in this spirit that this strategic forum will take place. The event invites the Montréal business community to learn more about the historical, economic and social contributions of the communities that built Chinatown. It will put forward the solutions of community stakeholders in order to contribute to the mobilization and sense of belonging of all residents of Greater Montréal, for a prosperous and inclusive future of Chinatown.
In order to foster this essential dialogue between the Chinese and Asian communities and the business community, the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal is proud to join forces with the Ville de Montréal, the Ministère de l'Immigration, de la Francisation et de l'Intégration, and several Montréal leaders of Chinese origin to propose the first intercultural and engaging discussion forum on the future of Montréal's Chinatown.
