Montréal, February 5, 2016 – A few days before the important Strategic Forum “It’s a Changing World: Let’s Get Ready for the Jobs of the Future!”, the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal has released a background paper on the skills of the future.
Developed in partnership with the Bureau de coopération interuniversitaire, Montréal CEGEPs and Éducation Montréal, the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal, the Conseil emploi métropole and the Ministère de l’Économie, de la Science et de l’Innovation, this background paper is a shared analysis tool that socioeconomic players in the metropolitan area can use to help fill the jobs of tomorrow.
An economy undergoing a profound shift
“Certain Montréal businesses are having difficulty meeting their needs and tapping into a pool of specialized labour,” said Michel Leblanc, President and CEO of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal. “This situation is aggravated by the emergence of disruptive technologies that force them to quickly adapt and review their business model, approach and strategies to remain productive and competitive.”
A city with everything it needs to make its mark
These technology, economic and social changes mean developing new skills for existing occupations, along with creating new occupations. Above all, these changes will present new opportunities for collaboration and doing business between different socioeconomic players from sectors of excellence.
“The city has major assets we can build on to create quality jobs that meet the needs of businesses while generating wealth,” Mr. Leblanc said. “More than ever, government, schools and businesses have to work together to tackle the new realities of the job market.”
Concrete solutions to create more wealth
On February 12, representatives of government, education and business will present the best strategies implemented at home and internationally to reduce the skills gap, better understand future labour challenges, find solutions and set priorities in developing skills for the future.
