Montréal’s business community commits to helping Syrian refugees

Montréal, June 1, 2016 – One hundred business representatives responded to the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal’s call and took part in a day of familiarization and meetings with 100 Syrian refugees who’ve recently moved here. Organized by the Board of Trade, in collaboration with Intact Financial Corporation and CN, the event included a seminar on the Montréal job market as well as a networking activity.

“The integration of Syrian refugees into Quebec society is mainly achieved through their entry onto the job market. Even if they do not have the same profile as economic immigrants, we strongly believe in their potential for integration and in their potential for contributing to the city’s social and economic development. Montréal’s business community is committed to supporting them but we must keep collaborating with partners in the private and public sectors. It is our collective responsibility,” said Michel Leblanc, President and CEO of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal.

In addition to fostering the development of a professional relationship with representatives from local businesses, this day of familiarization and meetings helped participants obtain useful information on their professional fields directly from the individuals who operate in these sectors.

“I’d like to thank Intact Financial Corporation and CN, who decided to get involved by offering financial support to organize this day. I also want to thank the Centre d’appui aux communautés immigrantes for their help in bringing together the refugees who participated,” said Mr. Leblanc. Following a call by the Board of Trade last December, more than 50 representatives from the business community pledged to hire Syrian refugees and provide them with professional coaching.
